Geoffrey Chaucer’s guest appearance at Bristol Business Network!

April 18, 2013
Geoffrey Chaucer  (whose Canterbury Tales were read at the court of Richard II for the first time on 17/4/1397) was featured at the Bristol Business Network event on strangely enough the 17/4/13 at Mercure Holland House Hotel and Spa.
Little did Geoffrey know that words that he wrote over 600 years ago would be used in the context of networking!
“Life is short. Art long. Opportunity fleeting.  Experience treacherous.  Judgement difficult.”  Surely networking helps and supports that meeting face to face can take out the difficulty and treachery!
“Nothing ventured.  Nothing gained”  – if you go to an event you will benefit from the opportunities that are gained from conversation.
The event began with an informative and enlightening seminar hosted by Oliver Dymond on the world of spread betting.  Oliver covered

Advantages of Spread Betting

  • No Stamp duty is payable (a saving of typically 0.5% compared to a traditional share purchase)
  • Tax Free Profits: Profits on spread betting are not subject to capital gains tax (subject to tax law changes)
  • Profit from falling or rising markets.
  • They are traded on margin therefore bets can be placed with a relatively small initial outlay.
  • A single account can give you access to far greater range of financial markets. – Oliver spoke about a number of providers including IG, Capital Spreads)
  •  Risk can be limited by using a ‘Stop Loss’.

What can you trade?spread bet on?

  • Stock market indices such as the FTSE or NASDAQ.
  • Individual shares from the FTSE 100 and FTSE 250, but also from leading US and European shares.
  • Currencies, FX.
  • Commodities
  • Futures and options.

So, if it’s tat you want and a decent price,
From a chap who smiles and is awfully nice

From the cheapest pen to the poshest of prize

Don’t just sit there, open your eyes

You know who I am, you know that I’m odd

You know that I’ll treat you as if you were god

I’m king of the tat, with a mouth of a sewer

Don’t just think of orders, go be a do’er

And do hope that I haven’t been too much of a twit
