Updated – Exeter Business Network September event – great scheduling!
It must be purely coincidence or was it a great piece of scheduling?
September 4th is not only the next Exeter Business Network event but also the 15th year since Larry Page and Sergey Brin founded Google!
Not wishing to look for any more coincidences but in my view there is one more – the seminar before THE networking lunch is all about remote and virtual working – something that Google (and other providers!) has really made very accessible and workable – but there are challenges that exist.
The seminar before THE networking lunch, is being hosted (no pun intended!) by Bev Holloway who has developed the a virtual arm of her business and is well versed in what we – you – those that work remotely – need to do to be more productive, effective and happy with this way of working.
Titled – Overcoming the challenges of remote/virtual working – there are some startling statistics in today’s working world……
At the end of 2009, 12.8% of the workforce (3.7 million people) worked mainly at or from home. This is a 21% increase since 2001. The region with the highest level of homeworking is the South West, at 15.6%.*
According to the ONS report on Self-Employed Workers in the UK February 2013, Self-employment has risen by 367,000 since the downturn in 2008 and 58% of self-employed people use their home for work purposes.
The government plans that 90% of the population will have access to Superfast broadband by 2017.
BUT
In March 2013, Yahoo’s CEO Marissa Mayer banned her staff from working from home. Against the grain you would think?
She may recognise some of the challenges that remote/virtual/home working has as might you:
- Performance issues
- Loss of creativity and cooperation
- Social Isolation
- Communication barriers
If you have a remote team, work from home, have offices in multiple locations or if you are just plain interested in how the working world is changing, come along.
This interactive seminar will explore :
- What lies beneath these four challenges – why they exist
- Typical remote scenarios
- Practical ways to overcome the challenges
- for you
- with your team
- the benefits of remote working
Bev works with Global organisations and SME’s alike to provide practical and effective learning solutions.
