No SIC in sight – just opportunities

February 18, 2014
A brief introduction..

I have been considering a blog post about this for some time.  Why, you may ask?  Well, one reason is that with Business Network SW membership categories are used to enable the unique seating plan system to work.  My research took me to the ONS website where all the SIC data is held.  Many years ago the Yellow Pages would have been the oracle but times change.  During this research I thought why not clarify the SIC for Business Network SW – looking through all 328 pages of Indexes to the UK Standard Industrial Classification of Economic Activities 2007 I could not find networking or events or meetings but I did find Business Organisations!  And the other reason – the clue is there – is that I am a bit of an “anorak” when it comes to things like this!

Even among the list of new additions (September 2013) which included everything from “Aerial, photography for cartographic and spatial activity purposes”, “Freshwater crustaceans and molluscs gathering” to  “Hosiery printing (manufacture)” and “Condensed milk (manufacture)” as well as “Life Vests made of canvas (manufacture) and Life Vests made of cork (manufacture)” including “Sports nets (manufacture), Production of compost from organic waste” and to be expected “Wind turbines (manufacture), Burglar alarms electric sound signalling for motor vehicles” not forgetting “Pizza, frozen or otherwise preserved (manufacture), Ice (for human consumption)” and then numerous “repair and maintenance” for all sorts of electronic equipmemt.  And finally “Television distribution rights acquisition” and the “Official Receiver”!There was no mention of networking – with so many groups and organisations doing it is this time for a category?

More on the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) which was first introduced into the UK in 1948 for use in classifying business establishments and other statistical units by the type of economic activity in which they are engaged.   The classification provides a framework for the collection, tabulation, presentation and analysis of data, and its use promotes uniformity.   In addition, it can be used for administrative purposes and by non-government bodies as a convenient way of classifying industrial activities into a common structure.   Since 1948 the classification has been revised in 1958, 1968, 1980, 1992, 1997, and 2003.

So why an article on The SIC?

It lists businesses that could and would benefit from networking – how simple is that!

Why?  There is the business to business aspects of exchanging ideas, sharing expertise, growing connections and helping businesses grow through the relationships that they forge. People who network value expertise to allow them to focus on life and business – because no one knows everything and even if they do they do not have the time to do everything.  Outsourcing whether it be bookkeeping, hairdressing, personal training, carpet cleaning, taxi trips, ironing, IT training, factoring will all help a business owner become more successful as they can concentrate on their skill and passion that will drive the business forward while the other aspects are being dealt with – as Michael Gerber calls it “leveraging”.

BUT and that is a big but –  All business people are also consumers – so a business that maybe B2C will still benefit from networking!

So looking through the list below (I hasten to add that the list is not all 328 pages – this link will take you to that list) – is there a service/expert/some leverage that would help you or someone you know?  Or do you know a business owner in one (or more) of the areas who you could introduce to networking?
