Chrysler, Ernst and Exeter Business Network – their words not mine!

April 3, 2014

Walter Chrysler (born 2//4/1875) said “The real secret of success is enthusiasm” – that’s networking (in fact business) in a nutshell.  Max Ernst the painter (I mean artist – unless there is a painter called Ernst who does a great turn on your skirting boards!) was born 2/4/1891 and he quoted as saying “All good ideas arrive by chance”

Well, the Exeter Business Network event at The Lord Haldon Country Hotel increased the chances by bringing together numerous people from a whole range of businesses to engage in conversations, develop the relationships and connections that lead to collaboration and business success.

The event began with a superb seminar hosted by Trevor Vanstone and Richard Hookway from Amarisk – billed as the Essentials of Employment – in short all of the things people ring us up about! It should be a lively session where we will also look at some of the myths around employment and changes coming up.

Trevor began by talking about John Adair’s action centered leadership which clearly demonstrated the way in which an effective business works and where the essentials of employment sit

Good managers and leaders should have full command of the three main areas of the Action Centred Leadership model, and should be able to use each of the elements according to the situation. Being able to do all of these things, and keep the right balance, gets results, builds morale, improves quality, develops teams and productivity, and is the mark of a successful manager and leader

Those attending then shared their burning questions and issues – among which there was the following…..

  • Shifts/flexible working
  • self employed or employed
  • training needs and scheduling
  • duty of care for home and alone workers
  • long term sickness
  • flexible working and the right to request
  • capability and retirement
Their expertise was demonstrated in answering these questions (and more that came up in the ensuing discussions!) and their wealth of experience in working with organisations large and small showed that what they offer is real advice and support and not the theory that is often offered
THE networking lunch followed with each table being hosted and everyone having the opportunity to present their business and what it can offer in terms of benefits to those around the table.  Everyone was also asked to share “what they wanted to achieve in the next 90 days” and this developed in to more conversations and opportunities and even led to a potential collaboration as someoone wanted “Social media support” and one person was looking to increase the “social media support” aspect of his business!  Here’s the Tweet!
