The good old days – Yellow Pages now and then!

January 23, 2015

Whilst sat in the lovely surroundings of the Mount Somerset Hotel

earlier this week a wave of nostalgia washed over me!

I had picked up the Yellow Pages as I left the house and it made me think!

Many years ago when I was working in the leisure business in facilities with large indoor areas and large car parks we would always get a booking (lucrative – I can say that now!) from Yellow Pages – they needed space – no guesses why

Yellow Pages when it could be used to change light bulbs!

Space for the articulated lorries to be able to park and unload

Space for the pallets of Yellow Pages to be stored to await collection

Yellow Pages in storage in India

Space to set up numerous tables so that they could then allocate the Yellow Page directories to the appropriate distributor

Space for the distributors to gather, have coffee (more revenue for the facility!), get their instructions before loading their cars and heading off to ensure that the local populace got their copy of the Yellow Pages

And this would be repeated over 3 or 4 days (I did say it was lucrative!) and regular.

What happens now?

A single person with a a bag who goes house to house and can deliver to many houses in one trip at least that’s what happened where I live

And here’s why…

My Yellow Pages at The Mount Somerset Hotel – full frontal!

A profile view – not so good for changing light bulbs – perhaps a draught excluder?

What was an institution, a must have, a must be in for a business has been taken over by technology and online presence.

That’s the nostalgia trip over!
