What a great networking story featuring Mick Jagger…..
It often said that it is not what you know but who you know that can really make a difference in your business and the following story is a great example.
The story concerns Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones (just in case you didn’t know!) – back in the late 1960’s – 1968 to be precise – after numerous hits and world tours the band were in financial difficulties – each of the members was overdrawn and the management they had at the time – Allan Klein – was the only one benefiting from this super success. To emphasise the point Mick jagger was living in a house in London that he couldn’t even afford to furnish.
It was at this point that Mick (I do no know him personally – but I am only 2 handshakes away – I’ll explain that at the end of this post) turned to his friend Christopher Gibbs – an art dealer – Mick’s reasoning was that someone like Gibbs would know the right people to talk to.
What followed was true networking in action…….Prince Rupert Loewenstein received a phone call from Christopher asking if he could look after the “financial side of these friends of mine, Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones.” Prince Rupert’s reply was quite funny…..as he said he had never heard of The Rolling Stones and would need some time to investigate…..
And then, a networking essential Mick Jagger and Prince Rupert Loewenstein met face to face and to quote Prince Rupert – “At the end of our conversation it was clear to me that Mick and I had clicked on a personal level. I certainly felt that Mick was a sensible, honest person. And I was equally certain that I represented a chance for him to find a way out of a difficult situation”

And then, as they say, the rest is history!
AN EXTRACT FROM THE BOOK BY Prince Rupert Loewenstein that tells this in a bit more detail
Networking is about connections and conversations and above all about meeting face to face and building the relationships that count from there!
And finally – how am I only 2 handshakes away from Sir Mick Jagger……my wife once worked in an accountancy practice in London that had Jerry Hall as a client and Jerry visited the office……
