YOUR EVENT ITINERARY

Date – Wednesday 23rd January

Venue – The Cowshed

10.00 – 11.45am – Business seminar before lunch being hosted by Inge Dowden

How to set meaningful goals for 2019

January is traditionally the time for New Year’s Resolutions, but personally I don’t like them very much. Often, they are things that we don’t really want, and we end up ditching them before the month is over.

In this seminar, we’re going to look at setting some meaningful goals for your life and your business. Not just for 2019, but long-term as well. Things that are important to you and that you’re excited about, so that you’re much more motivated to achieve them.  And once you’ve set some great goals for yourself, we’ll also look at how to put them on a vision board.

Because remember: you deserve nothing less, than happiness and success!

Coffee and networking from 10am and session starts at 10.30am (optional, always rewarding, included in the price and a great networking opportunity!)

From 11.45 am –  THE Networking lunch

11.45 am – 12.30pm   – networking over drinks

12.30 pm –  Take your seats for lunch

From 12.50 pm – Table presentations – exchange business cards, make your 3-minute presentation, and listen for opportunities – your table host will direct proceedings! All while a delicious 2 course lunch is served to you

1.30 pm – 1.40 pm        Table to table networking – your opportunity to introduce yourself to someone seated at a different table.  The seating plan has a list of all those attending today’s event – the pink sheets.  Please ask Sean if you need an introduction brokered

1.40 pm –  The 10 minutes  – Planet Mark Start

2.00pm – Event ends – but feel free to continue networking and continue your conversations and one to ones here at the venue.

What you can take away – your notes, actions, ideas, follow up

  • Who may benefit from your conversations today?
  • A one to one or a follow up telephone call?
  • Passing on a lead?
  • Acting as a connector?
  • Connect on LinkedIn? Follow on Twitter
  • Share some information?
  • Refer some business to one of your customers/contacts?
  • Ask for help?
  • Assistance for future developments

Father Christmas is real….and is featured at Bristol Business Network’s December event!

Wednesday 12th December

Father Christmas is real. It’s all about the proposition.

If you are looking to visit or join a business network in Bristol then this is by far the best! Not only will you get to meet some interesting and influential people in a networking format which is different and really works but you will also get the opportunity to attend free monthly seminars on a wide range of topics which will be useful to you and your business” David Doughty – Excellencia

  • You benefit from the free business seminar
  • You will meet other business owners, directors & decision makers over drinks 11.45am – 12.30pm
  • You have relationship building conversations over a served, 2 course lunch from 12.30pm
  • Your table is hosted & you don’t sit with anyone who does what you do
  • Back to your office for the afternoon as event finishes at 2pm.

Bristol Business Network has been operating successfully since 1993 and because we target senior decision-makers it is all about establishing meaningful business relationships – not a ‘hard sell’.

Many business people prefer face-to-face networking opportunities because they prefer actually knowing and meeting who they intend to do business with. But don’t just take our word for it – come and chat to our members and let then tell you why they find our format so effective.

Business Seminar before lunch hosted by

Hosted by Michael Evans* – Beyond Consulting

michael_portrait

Michael Evans – Business seminar host

Michael has 17+ years in marketing, sales and business management. Having started his career with Intel, he went on to develop his marketing skills at Vodafone and Netgear. He’s the proud co-founder of BPI OnDemand, an award winning Oracle CRM / CX solutions partner and following his fight with leukaemia, he set-up Beyond-Consulting, to get back to what he loves – creating great marketing for SME businesses.

Father Christmas is real. It’s all about the proposition.

Why do children believe and buy-in to the idea of Father Christmas? In the eyes of a child, Father Christmas is real, because the proposition that’s portrayed by parents, films and the whole event, delivers what they are wishing for, consistently, every year. And just like children at Christmas time, your customers are looking for you to consistently deliver a particular proposition – a solution to their desires, challenges and goals.

Content: A great marketing campaign is based around a fantastic proposition. The proposition is what will be better, different or easier once the customer has used or experienced your product or service. So just like Father Christmas, how do you deliver happiness to your customers?

Why you should come: This session will improve your core message about what you and your business do for your customers.

What you will take from it: A clear outline of how to create a great proposition message and how to consistently deliver that proposition.

Actions for your business: Create your proposition, identify how you can improve the consistency of delivery and filter these into your marketing and way of doing business.

Coffee and networking from 10.00am – seminar starts at 10.30am and runs until 11.45am. (optional, always rewarding, included in the price and a great networking opportunity)

Followed by THE Christmas Networking Lunch

Drinks and informal, free range networking from 11.45am.  Sit down at 12.30pm for 2 course networking lunch with coffee.  Finishing at 2pm ish as we have….

Raffle to support The Jessie May Trust

Jessie May is a Bristol-based charity providing nursing care at home for children and young people with life limiting conditions who are not expected to live beyond the age of 19. Jessie May was established in September 1994 by Chris and Philippa Purrington, following the death of their baby daughter Jessica May. She died from a genetic condition known as severe Spinal Muscular Atrophy when she was only 4½ months old.

Jessica’s parents were determined to do what they could to enable other children with conditions like Jessica’s and their families to have support in their own homes and the choice to die at home when that time comes. After a lot of hard work and perseverance initial funding was secured, and Jessie May was officially launched in 1996.

For reasons of safety and security, all Jessie May Care Team personnel are employed through University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust (UHBristol), and these posts are fully funded by Jessie May. All administrative personnel are employed directly by the charity. The Trust is almost entirely reliant upon voluntary funding, and encourages donations from individuals, corporate organisations, community groups and grant-making or charitable trusts. No charge is made to families using the services of the charity.

Since Jessie May was founded in 1996 the charity has supported over 300 children and their families in Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset, Bath & North East Somerset, and Swindon & Wiltshire.

EVENT GALLERY

A-Z of networking – part 12 – the U’s and V’s – Uncover to Visibility

Hello and welcome

For first timers a brief introduction……

This A-Z has been compiled from sources gathered over the last 25 years – many before Google – it is by no means exhaustive or I trust exhausting; merely something that will help you get more from your networking.

Originally written or should I say compiled as a resource for members of Business Network SW and then developed into a series of seminars.  Now it’s the basis for a number of blog posts which I trust that you will find informative, useful and – dare I say, even worth sharing and ultimately even engage with.

I will serialise in posts over the coming weeks and months and it will develop as more knowledge and wisdom becomes available – which it undoubtedly will!

U

Uncover others’ challenges, issues, needs, pain, problems, developments, opportunities that you or someone you know can help with.  You should not be looking for ways to always promote your business and what it does.  During the conversations that you have, yes, conversations, not a sales spiel or your super rehearsed “elevator pitch” you will get to know the people that you meet and what their challenges are and what opportunities thay are looking for (personally or for people that they know).  Here’s where your own network can help.  A great opportunity to be the connector.

Think about what help/support/challenges/opportunities are facing your customers, suppliers, contacts?  It could be that during your conversation you uncover something from the person(s) that could be beneficail to both parties; again you are the connector.

It’s all about the questions that you ask.  And the response to those questions.  And the rapport that you build.  If you are from difefrent businesses, in different industries then it could be that what you have in common, the thing that can help build that rapport, is not business related but something like where you are from, your journey to event, a sporting event, a TV programme, film, a restaurant or some person that you both know.  See questions

Unique – you are unique, so are the people you meet.  One size doesn’t fit all so by listening attentively you can adapt what you say to suit the people you are talking to.  Be that unique person and be memorable for your genuineness, humilty, openness and willingness to help (without wanting something in return).

Unlimited – opportunities exist when you make conversation and start to build a relationship – maybe not immediately or directly but by working at the relationship then all sorts can happen.  Covered in a lot more detail in Abundance

V

Visibility – by being present, your values are in action – you are demonstrating what you and your business are about – Brand You!

BUT…think about the networking that you do and whether it is helping you achieve your goals – both personal and business.  Are you enjoying the networking taht you do…if not then this could well be why you get a feeling of “this networking is not working”.  When you go to the events are you looking to just secure business or to become a connector, help others, introduce others?

You could be super visible going to every networking event there is (OK perhaps not every one as there are hundreds) – morning, noon and night.  If you enjoy this and it works for you then great – there are many businesses that adopt this approach and it works for them…but you are not them!  Your enjoyment and passion for waht you do and how you help others needs to shine through when you meet others – would you do business with someone who is negative….

Let me explain what I mean by negative…..they do not smile, there is no eye contact, their handshake does not inspire, they are not enthusiastic about what they do, they seem not be wanting to be at the event, the language they use is not inspiring…..we have all met them and sometimes wish we hadn’t!  Seriously though if you feel like this yourself (and we all do sometimes) and you cannot shake this feeling…then don’t just go to an event for the sake of it….change your attitude and become the person that you would want to do business with

Shake hands with conviction and genuinely – a crushing handshake proves nothing – see H – handshake

Smile when the smile is natural, don’t paste on a camouflage smile to fit a situation. Always have a smile on your face. Not only will you look more approachable and friendly but if you’re known as that happy jolly person people will gravitate towards you.  Not a sapper of people’s energy and optimism!

Story – what’s yours – what you do in your business that helps people, a customer story, the real benefits that you bring (not a list of features), with no jargon, something that is memorable….

A big thank you to Alison Macguire who shared the following infographic from The Hoffman Agency – Alison’s article is here

stoytelling

Study non-verbal cues of your listener; do they agree, care, understand?  A bit of time researching this will give you plenty of pointers – the following infographic from The Salesforce Hub shows how to spot “active listening” – if the person (or people) you are talking to are not doing these then think about what you are saying….what’s the story, is about you or them….

Study – you are probably totally upto date with your CPD for your profession and subscribe to the latest industry news, follow the thought leaders in your profession…..the same needs to apply to the networking that you do.  There is a plethora of networking advice avaliable at the press of a key…..tips, networking experts, TED talks, blogs, other people who network successfully

Social Media – your presence online if set up correctly and being used as part of your marketing (networking is part of your marketing) will help build the relationships.  People can find out more about you, your business, see that the person they meet (or have met) is congruent with what’s online.  What you say, what you share, who you are talking to, what people are saying about you are all part of Brand You

When you see what goes on in 60 seconds online you will also see how valuable those inter- personal, face to face meetings are.  Where you can really have an impact on how people feel….and I’ll turn to Maya Angelou here…..

The feeling part is what get’s lost in all this……thank you Statista Charts

Team – Once you’ve found a networking group that suits you and your business you’ll find yourself part of an incredibly loyal team.  TEAM – Together Each Achieves More – It will become a mastermind group that you can share and learn from: a group that will be ambassadors and advocates for your business, people with expertise that can help you and those that you know

Time – It’s important to put aside time outside of your networking activity to work on getting to know fellow members and bringing business to others. If you think you can just turn up for the event and that’s it, you’ll never reap the true awards available – see R.

Timing – arrive at least on time – even better early – allow time to get to the venue, park and arrive fully prepared.  Rushing in, forgetting your business cards, glasses, the reason you’re there – think about the first impressions.

Tom Peters – see B – Brand You.

Trust is the essential precondition upon which all real success depends. The key to trust is action, and in particular commitments; commitments made and commitments honoured.

Trust requires some degree of mutual understanding and cooperation while distrust is adversarial. Trust suggests the will to believe while distrust demands suspicion.

Trust is built step-by-step and commitment-by-commitment on every level. Building trust means thinking in a positive way and not only in terms of risks &vulnerabilities. We must force ourselves to think about uncertainties as possibilities & opportunities, not as liabilities.

Conversation leads to mutual understanding, and understanding should lead to resolutions and engagements, actions that will bring about new situations and open up new possibilities.

And thank you to Trusted Adviser for a superb infographic

Treat a networking event as a fixed appointment – something that is in your diary/schedule for a reason – to grow your business.  Networking is part of your marketing plan and should be treated as important as any other appointment.  At an event you can meet someone before the event or after – what about during?

Thank you for reading this far – the next instalment will be available soon and please feel free to comment, share
